hi

Alex Rix (she/her/they) is a freelance movement artist and massage therapist originally from Western Massachusetts and currently based out of Los Angeles. Alex is interested in exploring how the nuances of life translate into the body and to movement. The body is a constant well of inspiration and curiosity for both her dance and bodywork practices - discovering how to navigate each moment and movement with care in our ever-changing environment. Currently Alex is dancing with Summation Dance/LA, Rebecca Lemme // Acts of Matter, Gianna Burright, as well as producing and creating her own work in the greater LA area. Most recently Rix performed in: NEW SHOES at Highways Performance Space, DIG and Fête with Acts of Matter, and Show ‘N Tell's "it's all a game" in Long Beach. As a collaborator, dancer, bodyworker, and producer, Rix is inspired by the radical act of caring for self and thus caring for others. Rix received their BFA in Dance and BA option in Dance Science from Cal State Long Beach and their Bodywork and Healing Arts Certification from Panacea Holistic Institute.

more about me

Alex Rix is a Long Beach based dance artist who explores how functional anatomy coexists within the body while challenging normal body shapes and expectations through movement. Rix integrates her anatomical knowledge from the realms of dance and bodywork to find new ways of working and viewing the body. They have been influenced by their training most predominantly in modern, contemporary, and somatic practices. She feels at home in a movement style that demonstrates both strength, vulnerability, and humanity.

Currently, Rix is working with Summation Dance / LA, Rebecca Lemme//Acts of Matter, and Gianna Burright. She is performing throughout the greater LA area, as well as providing accessible bodywork for the dance community out of Stomping Ground LA. She is also co-producing the second installment of a series of shows in Long Beach known as Show and Tell, where she curates, creates, and facilitates community and conversation about one's creative process.

In the past year, Alex has collaborated and performed at REDCAT's NOW Festival with Kevin Williamson, presented work in NEW SHOES at HIGHWAYS Performance Space with Meg Madorin, danced with Rebecca Lemme//Acts of Matter for two seasons, and was a member of Summation Dance Company in their west coast premiere.

Expanding from dance for the stage, Rix had the opportunity to co-choreographed a 30 minute music video film, with Katelyn Sanchez. This project, Kismet, for Jane Free Music premiered in July of 2021, as a drive in movie in Downtown Long Beach and has won multiple, international film festival awards for "Best Dance" and "Best Choreography" since. In 2019 she joined Kevin Williamson + Company working on a project, Safe and Sound, which has also been transformed into a multiple award winning short film by Kevin Williamson and Taso Papadakis, as well as a stand alone dance work.

Alex has had the opportunity to perform professional works by Christine Bonansea, Rebecca Bryant, Gianna Burright, Colleen Dunagan, Stephen Koplowitz, Rebecca Lemme, Jennifer Polins, Colleen Thomas, Taryn Vander Hoop, and Kevin Williamson. Rix has performed in four installments of NEW SHOES at HIGHWAYS Performance Space in Santa Monica, in the Odyssey Theater dance series in Santa Monica, Los Angeles Dance Festival, and at the Bates Mill Complex in Lewiston, ME. Among numerous performances in traditional dance venues, Rix has experience in a variety of site-specific work, ranging from coffee shops, to a run down mill complex and piazzas in Italy.

As a scholarship student, Rix trained at California State University Long Beach graduating with a BFA in Dance and a BA in Dance Science. She is the first student to receive both degrees within four years. Along with her university training, she has attended the Carmel Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, BODYTRFFIC’s Winter Intensive and Dance Italia in Lucca, Italy. Additionally, Alex is a graduate of Panacea Holistic Institute's 555 hour Bodywork and Healing Arts Program where she received her Massage Therapy Certification.
